Membership in the undergraduate chapter is still controlled by the
students, and is awarded on the basis of demonstrated devotion to the
University of Cincinnati, congeniality and gentlemanliness, and leadership
in campus social, athletic and academic pursuits. Although membership
is generally limited to students in the pre-junior, junior and senior
classes, on occasion a truly outstanding graduate student has been selected.
Further, honorary membership has occasionally been awarded, but only
in rare instances where a candidate has demonstrated, over an extended
period of time, an unusually productive capacity for service to the
University of Cincinnati.
Originally, meetings of the active chapter were held in public rooms
of the University. Soon, however, meetings were rotated each week to
a different fraternity house on campus. In 1939, as a memorial to his
son Robert H. "Huck" Heuck, Jr. ('37), Robert Heuck, Sr. ('13)
donated $700 and the basement of his Jefferson Avenue home to the active
chapter for the development of a regular meeting place. The gift was
gratefully accepted, and the area was promptly transformed into "Huck
Hall." With the later sale of the Heuck residence, a Sigma Sigma
fund-raising campaign was conducted throughout the alumnal body, and
money was raised to purchase a home at 120 West St. Clair Street on
July 14, 1964. This location served as the permanent home for Sigma
Sigma until the present house, located at 15 West Daniel's Street, was
purchased on June 2, 1971. In all Sigma Sigma houses, the meeting room
has always been known as "Huck Hall." The current location
remains the campus home where weekly meetings of the active chapter
are held, and where "Reception" for all Sigma Sigma's and
their guests are held after varsity athletic events.
Initiation ceremonies are conducted each year at the Winter Banquet,
traditionally held the day after Thanksgiving, and the Summer Banquet,
held in June during the final week of classes. Initiation fees, which
include the cost of the official badge, as well as the cost of the member's
engraved beer mug, are the only charges ever assessed a member of Sigma
Sigma The Constitution of Sigma Sigma reads: "The name of the organization
shall be Sigma Sigma. All matters transacted shall be for the good of
the organization and the University of Cincinnati. This Constitution
shall not be amended."
Such is the spirit the organization which has existed for a century
on the campus of the University of Cincinnati as its most prestigious
society.
This foundation of service to the University will serve Sigma Sigma
well as it enters its second century of service to our Alma Mater.
