History of Sigma Sigma

Sigma Sigma was founded in the summer of 1898 by Parke Johnson, Russell Wilson, Robert Humphreys, Walter Everhardt, Charles W. Adler, Smith Hickenlooper, Andrew Hickenlooper, and Ada Innes. Their purpose was to bind in closer union the fraternity chapters then existing at the University of Cincinnati, and to advance the University of Cincinnati to a position second to none among colleges of the country. While Sigma Sigma was organized by Sophomores, and was recognized as a sophomore society at the time of its founding, by 1902 it had come to be regarded as an upperclass honorary. This character has been retained until the present day, and unselfish service and loyalty to the best interest of our Alma Mater have been the outstanding characteristics of every man so far admitted into her membership. In her ranks are to be found leaders in all phases of student activity on the campus.

Sigma Sigma is strictly a local society, and will remain so, as its most important function - that of teaching loyalty to the University of Cincinnati - can best be performed as a local organization. Perhaps its strength, durability, and longevity can best be attributed to its dedicated and loyal alumnal organization which includes - among others-several college and university Presidents, Mayors of the City of Cincinnati, countless college professors and coaches, flag rank officers of the Armed Forces of the United States, captains in business and industry - all committed to the advancement of their Alma Mater.
